Day School with Professor Joyce Hill

Saturday 9th March 2013

Cracoe Village Hall, Cracoe, BD23 6LQ

10.00 am to 4.00 pm

Joyce is a specialist in the language and literature of Anglo-Saxon England, with over 100 publications to her name. She is now an Emeritus Professor at the University of Leeds, where she was at various times Professor of Old and Middle English Language and Literature, Head of the School of English, Director of the Centre for Medieval Studies, and the University’s first woman Pro-Vice-Chancellor. She is still very active in research, publishing extensively and speaking at conferences and research symposia world-wide, but she is also much in demand as a speaker to local groups, which is an activity she says she very much enjoys.

During the day school Joyce will talk on the following:

Buried Treasure I: The Sutton Hoo Ship Burial
Buried Treasure II: The Staffordshire Hoard
Anglo-Saxon Churches and their Treasures
The Vale of York Hoard and its Viking Context

Registration with tea and coffee is from 9.30 am. The cost of the day school is £5 which includes refreshments. Lunch is not included but participants are welcome to bring packed lunches or alternatively there are local hostelries nearby, The Devonshire Arms in Cracoe Village (http://devonshirecracoe.co.uk/) and The Angel in Hetton (http://www.angelhetton.co.uk/).
