Tales That Timbers Tell: Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group

July 14 @ 08:00 - July 29 @ 19:00

Free

The main focus will be on the very interesting results of the dendrochronology UWHG commissioned in Kilnsey where the earliest timber found was growing at the time of the Norman Conquest.

It will also deal with a variety of other aspects of timber such as cruck frames, changes in construction style over time, the significance of the various marks on timber and the influence of the Baltic timber trade.

The display will concentrate on what UWHG have found in Upper Wharfedale during the course of their work in Kettlewell, Starbotton and Kilnsey.

A close study of timber can provide a wealth of information about the history of a building.

Our “Tales” take us from the riches of the monastic period to the daily observations of 19th century farming life written on the back of a barn door.
