Weaverthorpe Geophysical Survey

posted 1 Aug 2011 03:44 by Paul Brayford   [ updated 7 Aug 2011 09:49 ]

‘The Friends of St Andrews, Weaverthorpe, have secured funding from the LEADER Coast, Wolds, Wetlands & Waterways programme for geophysical surveys in the churchyard of St Andrews and on the site of the adjacent medieval manor house of the Fitzherberts at Weaverthorpe with the hope of learning more about these two iconic sites. Included in the programme is an opportunity for local people and others to learn how to undertake resistivity and gradiometer surveys (the ‘Geofizz’ of Time Team) under the expert guidance of the Landscape Research Centre (LRC). In the longer term LRC have agreed to lend The Friends equipment to allow us to undertake our own surveys and The Friends and LRC will be running a further training session on understanding the results later in the year. An initial survey training session was held on July 16 and there will be a second session on Sunday 4th September (10am-4pm). If you are interested in being involved please contact Pete or Jill Wilson at Rarey Farm, Weaverthorpe (01944-738282) or pandjwilson@btopenworld.com.

Outside Yorkshire but on its boundary, the North Pennines AONB Altogether Archaeology project is scheduled to last initially for 18 months, during which time it will undertake ten small-scale fieldwork projects at various locations throughout the AONB. Sites to be studied include prehistoric rock art, Roman roads, medieval castles, and multi-period archaeological landscapes. Volunteers will learn techniques of archaeological survey and excavation while undertaking exciting, original research at these sites. No experience is needed as full training will be given – all you require to become a volunteer is enthusiasm to find out more about your local heritage!

Further details of project fieldwork modules and other events will be posted on the North Pennines AONB website as they become available. It is hoped that further projects will lead on from the initial Altogether Archaeology initiative, for which funding will end in December 2011.

Life at No.57 – The Sheffield Terraced Street Dig

posted 14 Apr 2011 09:34 by Paul Brayford

Excavate a Victorian Terraced House! Finds washing, talks, hands-on activities.
An opportunity for everyone to get involved in this innovative community dig. FREE.

Sat 16–Sun 31 July 10.00–16.00

This year is Heeley City Farms 30th Anniversary and this years excavation will be a celebration Heeley Communities then and now.

The Back garden of a Victorian terraced house may seem like an unusual target for an archaeological dig, but this project which is in its third year, makes archaeology accessible to everyone enabling participants to learn about archaeological excavation techniques, and to experience the excitement of archaeological discovery at first hand.

For this year’s National Festival of British Archaeology, Heeley City Farm have teamed up with the Archaeologists from the University of Sheffield to further investigate Alexandra Road. Once a bustling street in the Sheffield district of Heeley. These gardens are now buried beneath the calm environment Heeley City Farm’s cows field!

This year will be developing the project based on the success of last year’s excavation and extending the excavation into local back gardens and green spaces. We will be investigating the lives and trades long gone of people in Heeley. There will be a number of opportunities for everyone to join in with activities and reviewing our findings so far. We will also be inviting people to come and share their memories of the houses which were demolished in the late 1970’s.

We will be continuing to excavate the site aiming to answer some of the many questions raised by last year’s excavation. Everyone is welcome to participate (under 8’s must be supervised by an adult) no previous experience needed and full training will be given but due to limited spaces please contact Sally Rodgers for a booking form and any other information.

Location: Heeley City Farm, Richards Road, Sheffield S2 4UR.
