The Archaeology of Excrement          Andrew Bone Jones

While studying the deep organic sediments of Viking Age and Roman York, Andrew Jones and colleagues at the Environmental Archaeology Unit, University of York, came to realise that human excrement was a major component of urban archaeological deposits. This talk outlines the research that was undertaken to better understand the anoxic deposits of York and to convince York Archaeological Trust to feature latrines and excrement in the Jorvik Viking Centre.

This pioneering work has since been more widely applied to sites across Europe and the Mediterranean including Pompeii.

Photographing the Towton Battlefield Human Remains     Eric Houlder

In August 1996, building work at Towton Hall, Towton, North Yorkshire, disturbed part of a medieval mass grave from the battle of Towton (fought between the rival factions of the Houses of Lancaster and York, AD 1461).  Eric was tasked with photographing the trauma injuries to the 24 skulls collected from the site.

Eric’s talk will look at his results putting them into the context of the probably bloodiest battle fought on English soil.

Further advances in Aerial Imaging in an archaeological context: Seeking new sites            Tony Hunt

Since the development of differential reflection in drone imagery Tony has now moved on to incorporate thermal orthomosaic into his data collection and attempted to apply plant health indexes to the combined output, with variable results.

As well as updating the latest science, the talk will be another opportunity to explore aerial images collected from a variety of sites centred around Yorkshire and view them in a new light.
