Axe looms for Wakefield museum

Wakefield’s historic museum is set to close and its collections moved to a new home in a bid to cut costs.

Council bosses say budget cuts and falling visitor numbers have left them with little choice but to make the controversial move, which will see the museum building reopen for use as a performing arts venue for students at Wakefield College. A report said the council did not have a statutory duty to provide museum services, but acknowledged they had an important role to play

The museum would move from Wood Street to the Council’s new civic building on Westgate, which opens in 2012 and will also include a library.
