Richard Hall Symposium 2022

Hoards in the North: northern identities in Viking hoards.

It’s ten years since the Silverdale Hoard, one of the largest Viking-age hoards ever found in England, was discovered in a field in Lancashire.

To celebrate its display at the JORVIK Viking Centre throughout 2022, the Richard Hall Symposium this year focuses on hoards: their concealment, their rediscovery, and their interpretation.

Confirmed speakers so far:

Allison Fox, Manx National Heritage

Martin Goldberg, National Museums Scotland

Lucy Moore, University of York

John Sheehan, University College Cork

Gareth Williams, British Museum

22nd May 9.00am-5.00pm

This year you can also join the symposium online.

Helen Thirza Addyman Lecture 2022

Communication, connectivity…combs: big stories written at the molecular level.

In this talk, Steve Ashby will discuss recent and ongoing work that draws on a somewhat unlikely source to answer big questions about Viking-Age Europe. Through applying novel biomolecular techniques to the study of hair combs found in settlement and burial contexts across Britain and northern Europe, we are now able to refine and redraw the chronology and geography of the Viking world.

This year you can also join the lecture online.
