Planning application for Shears Inn, Liversedge update 14th April 2021

We are pleased to learn that Kirklees Council has refused a planning application to demolish the Shears Inn at Liversedge. The Shears, which Kirklees regards as a non-designated heritage asset, was built c. 1773 and has demonstrable associations with the Luddite uprisings of the early 19th century. Although the building has been much altered, it provides a tangible sense of time and place for an area of working class history which is still taught in schools nationwide.  In addition it is an important element in the group of locations known as Shirley Country which attract literary tourists to the Kirklees district and contribute to its economy.
