Autumn Showcase 2020 statement and survey

Each autumn CBA Yorkshire holds a Showcase event to highlight the work that our members and affiliate local groups having been doing throughout the year. Despite the COVID lockdown we still have lots to shout about: from projects that are little more than barebone plans awaiting the time, resources and people to swing into action, right through to long-term projects that are nearing completion or have already published their amazing findings.

CBA Yorkshire is looking to showcase all of these in October 2020. The reason I am writing to you is not to ask whether this event should go ahead, but to ask you for your opinion regarding how we should bring this event to you.

Traditionally we would hire a venue – this year the Friends Meeting House in York has been proposed – and invite you all to join us. We would expect to host lots of stalls, from our members, affiliated groups, booksellers and others offering advice on all aspects of archaeology. That is one of the options.

The second option, because of the concern to protect our more vulnerable members and to observe the possible on-going constraints of social distancing, is to have a virtual Showcase. In that case, you as members would be able to view live presentations, take part in side discussions with people who share a particular interest, engage with the speakers and with friends old and new, all from the comfort of your home computer.

As time goes on it becomes more urgent that we choose which of these options to go with, and with that in mind we need to survey our members’ opinions. Whichever option you choose you can be assured of a fantastic range of speakers on a great diversity of community projects from all over Yorkshire, and the company (physically or virtually) of a great crowd of like-minded enthusiasts.

So, I would appreciate it if you could indicate your preference with the survey below where online votes and comments can be registered. The committee will make the decision, based on your votes and comments, on SATURDAY 1st AUGUST, so do please ensure that you have indicated your thoughts by then.

If you wish to make a representation to the committee at the on-line meeting when the decision will be made please do email me on Thank you for reading this and for your continued support in these difficult times.
